Multi-party Partnership Promotes Business & Human Rights Concept

Multi-party Partnership Promotes Business & Human Rights Concept.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UN Human Rights Council endorsed the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in June 2011. UNGPs are a set of guidelines for States and companies to prevent, address and remedy human rights abuses committed in business operations. The challenge is that until today the concept of Business and Human rights is still not well mainstreamed in business in Indonesia. Hence there is a need to socialize this concept more widely by the State, Private Sector and Civil Society.

Oxfam, International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID) and the Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) have taken an initiative to promote the concept of Business and Human Rights including promoting and supporting the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights or UNGPs. The program, funded by the European Union, aims at businesses at the national level whilst putting a particular attention to the palm oil sector in North Sumatra and West Kalimantan.

According to Junardy, President of IGCN, "Oxfam, INFID, and IGCN realize that promoting Business and Human Rights cannot be done just by one party. We need the collaboration of all stakeholders. This is closely related to Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institution and Goal 17 on Partnership of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

Meanwhile, Sugeng Bahagijo, Director of INFID, says that, "The inclusion of human right issues in many sectors reflects a growing social awareness on the impacts of business operation on human rights, both internal as well as external, such as to workers, consumers or community at large. This is what drove the rising awareness on responsibility on the part of the business community to prevent and minimize the negative impacts of their operations."

Budi Kuncoro, Country Director of Oxfam adds, "Oxfam is proud with this partnership and we hope that through this collaboration, civil society and business can jointly realize a situation where private sector applies full respect to human rights."

The three-year program is supported by funding from the European Union "Walking the Talk: Promoting Accountable Business through Advancement of United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) Implementation in Indonesia". The objective of this program is to promote accountable business through advancement in implementation of UNGPs.

The multi-party partnership to promote corporate responsibility to respect human rights is introduced at the Philanthropy Festival at JCC, Senayan, Jakarta on Saturday, 8 October 2016, at 17:00- 19:00 at the Philanthropy Stage. This initiative aims to promote multi-party partnership as a means to achieve SDGs more broadly.
