The sixth president of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono came to Pancer Door Beach this morning to present the ASC Women's Division finalists with their trophies and to be introduced to Indonesia's best surfers at the ASC sanctioned Hello Pacitan 2016 surfing competition.

ASC Head Judge Made Sadiarta from Bali introduced the past president to several of the top ASC surfers who are from Indonesia and boast about what they have accomplished, starting from Raditya Rondi and Dede Suryana winning gold medals at the Asian Beach Games in Bali in 2008 to Rio Waida winning the international Young Guns/King of the Groms event in California just two weeks ago.  He also was able to explain to the ex-president the importance of surfing, and how many world-class waves exist in Indonesia, and ask for his support in preparing Indonesian surfers for the upcoming 2020 Olympics, now that surfing has finally been added as an Olympic sport.

Later in the event judging tower SBY (as he is known) was introduced to the ASC's Tim Hain, and thanked him for what the ASC has been doing to support surfing in Indonesia.

After the ex-president had watched some of the surfers out in the water, it was time for him to move on to other commitments and for the remaining four heats of Round 2 to commence.  The waves conditions were slightly smaller than yesterday, but still provided excellent shape and plenty of opportunities for the surfers to impress the judges.

Bali's Made "Bol" Adi Putra quickly found his rhythm in Heat 5 and put fellow Balinese surfer Tommy Sobry on the ropes, and though Sobry staged a valiant comeback it wasn't enough to overcome the lead that Adi Putra had built up over the 30 minute heat.

In Heat 6 it was the battle of two regularfooters from the same surf club in Bali, the Padma Boy's Made Darmayasa and Nyoman "Blacky" Satria.  Known has a tireless wave catching machine, "Bleronk" Darmayasa made it clear from his first wave that there was no doubt of his intention to win a quarterfinal berth, which he did convincingly.

Heat 7 saw fellow Rip Curl team riders, veteran Pepen Hendrik and young grom Andre Anwar going head-to-head, but the wily Hendrik, who spends a lot of time in Pacitan having a home stay just down the road from Pancer Door Beach and surfing nearby Watu Karung, was not going to be denied and handily dispatched his much younger team mate.

In the final heat of the day it was 3-time ASC champion Raditya Rondi posting the highest score of the session, an 8.33 out of a possible 10 points, then going on to crush Muklis Anwar's hopes of a spot in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the event and what promises to be a memorable evening of entertainment with live entertainment and the awards presentation.

Quarterfinal Matchups:

  1. Dede Suryana vs Raju Sena
  2. Rio Waida vs Rizal Tandjung
  3. Made Adi Putra vs Made Darmayasa
  4. Pepen Hendrik vs Raditya Rondi

The competitors have been told to stand by at 11 pm for the start of the quarterfinals, depending upon waves conditions, in what promises to be a very exciting conclusion to the Hello Pacitan 2016 "Flaming of the Sea" ASC sanctioned surfing competition.
