UPDATE: Plaza Bali, Aura Cantik/ARI JV triumph in Jakarta T3U.
Airport operator Angkasa Pura II has confirmed to DFNIonline it has awarded the duty-free tenders for the upcoming Terminal Three Ultimate (T3U) at Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International airport to two operators: Plaza Bali and Aura Cantik.
Furthermore, DFNIonline has learned Aura Cantik has partnered with international duty-free player Aer Rianta International (ARI) for the tender, Aura Cantik general manager Travel Retail Jobin Samuel confirmed.
DFNIonline has sought confirmation from ARI, which communicated it was not in a position to make any official comment at this stage.
An Angkasa Pura II spokesman said: "We looked for partners who could associate good, luxury brands with our airport. Both the companies promised to bring those brands to us."
A Plaza Bali spokeswoman also confirmed the Indonesian travel retailer, which currently operates in Jakarta T2 and at Surabaya International airport in a joint-venture with Heinemann Asia Pacific, will operate the liquor, tobacco, confectionery, fashion and local specialities concession spanning 1,667 sq m across five stores. The spokeswoman confirmed Plaza Bali will operate the concession in T3U independently.
Aura Cantik, a Jakarta-based cosmetics company, will operate the 1,500sq m cosmetics concession.
A total of five companies were shortlisted for the duty-free tender including: PT SJ Indonesia (Lotte Duty Free Indonesia), PT Dufrindo International (Dufry Group), and PT Inti Dufree Promosindo, Indonesia's largest duty-free operator which has a joint-venture operation with DFS Group at Bali Ngurah Rai International airport.
Lotte Duty Free Indonesia currently operates two shops in T2 covering 880sq m and had revealed its ambition to expand to T3U to DFNIonline in 2014. Dufry Group also operates at Bali Ngurah Rai airport.
Jakarta's new T3U, which is slated to open at the end of the year, will cater to domestic and international flights run by national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia. International flights run by other airlines will gradually transition to the new terminal from T2, which will eventually become a domestic operation. The T3U is expected to be fully operational by March 2017 with a capacity of 25 million passengers.
Angkasa Pura II director Budi Karya Sumadi has been quoted in local Indonesian press stating the airport's goal is to become a tourism hub airport to rival Singapore Changi and Kuala Lumpur.
The new 380,000sq m terminal will feature the national tourism brand of "Wonderful Indonesia". Tourism minister Arief Yahya said in an official statement in July: "We agreed the concept of Terminal Three Ultimate is, in fact, a tourism hub airport. For this reason the brand 'Wonderful Indonesia' must play an important role here. An international airport is the main entrance where foreigners first set foot on Indonesian soil. It is the first impression of the country and the nation so that their first impression of Indonesia is really important."
