The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has welcomed the Indonesian government's decision to offer visa-free travel to the citizens of 169 countries.

The policy is valid for a maximum stay of 30 days and has no restriction on the number of visits per year. Nationals of visa-free countries can enter Indonesia at any of the country's 124 immigration checkpoints.

"Indonesia is setting an example to the world. UNWTO welcomes the decision of the government of Indon esia which clearly reflects the commitment of the country with the development of the tourism sector as a driver of economic growth, jobs and well-being for its people," said UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai.

Joint research by the UNWTO and World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has shown that visa facilitation in the ASEAN region could create up to 654,000 new jobs over a period of three years.

The region also stands to gain up to 10 million additional international visitors, generating up to US$12 billion in extra tourism receipts.
